Obama a Figure of Hope, but Not for All

Kevin Sullivan, Washington Post Foreign Service | June 6, 2008

Obama’s nomination as the democratic presidential candidate initiated enthusiasm abroad. ++ Many nations feel Obama as president "could help to reduce anti-US sentiment and even turn it around.” ++ In Europe Obama has strong support. ++ Many Germans see him as a transformational figure like Kennedy or King. ++ Israel is concerned: “in foreign policy toward the Middle East, he's going to be soft." ++ Palestinian Political Scientist Ali Jarbawi is pessimistic as well: "Do you think Obama would risk his reelection because of us?"
