Opportunity to Recast US-Pakistani Relations
Editorial, The New York Times | July 29, 2008
Yousaf Raza Gilani, the new civilian prime minister of Pakistan, is visiting Washington this week. ++ Talks between the leaders of Pakistan and the US are an opportunity to recast bilateral relations and start a closer cooperation to promote democracy and fight al-Qaeda. ++ To achieve that, Bush must express his commitment to the cause and declare more economic assistance and carefully monitored military aid. ++ Gilani, for his part, must make clear to his voters that extremism is a threat to Pakistan as much as it is to the US.
