Reasons for Green Optimism
The UN FAO's last survey of the world's forests reveals positive news on mother Earth's health: deforestation, including human-related deforestation, is slowing. ++ However, massively replanted forests such as those in China, do not preserve biodiversity as well as old forests and are not as resilient to natural disasters. ++ Gathering relevant data for a world comparison is another difficulty and there is a strong need to better monitor data to observe and assess the health of the world's forests.

Such SAP's commonly have water retention capacities of 200-300 times of its original weight when come into contact with running water and serves as a water reservoir for the plants having the ability to return about 95% of the water stored to the plants in response to the root pressure of the plants.
The SAP's when applied to the soil observed to be quite effective for 4-7 years as they have the ability to swell with water into gel-like crystals and supply the water thus stored to the plants and return to their original granular forms over and over again.
It has been observed that not only the plant mortality rates are reduced apreciably in planting saplings but also great savings on water are achieved as a result of prevention of evaporation & filtration as well as by the need for much less frequent irrigation. The use of SAP's in forestration has many other beneficial effects like aeration of the soil, etc.
