Russia Does not Hold all the Blame

Mikhail Gorbachev, last president of the USSR | August 12, 2008

Russia has continued to recognize Georgia's regional unity and merely responded to the Georgian attack on South Ossetia. ++ To call it an attack on "small, defenseless Georgia" is hypocritical and inhumane. ++ Western encouragement prompted Georgian leaders to think that they could escape the blame for a "blitzkrieg." ++ Russia is not seeking territorial expansion, but unlike the US has valid interests in the region. ++ Fighting must stop without delay and a sub-regional system of security must be developed.
