Russians Defend Against Non-Existing Air Force

Vladimir Socor, Georgian Daily | August 13, 2010

Moscow has stationed S-300 air defense missile systems in Abkhazia and similar devices in South Ossetia in a curious move, as Georgia possesses no air force. ++ Instead, the systems are geared toward blocking Georgian airspace. ++ The Russian move is intended as a message to Washington, by demonstrating air interdiction capabilities that could hamper its ability to use supply routes into Central Asia and Afghanistan. ++ The US should be particularly concerned with an eye to a possible confrontation with Iran.
