Saudi Arabia: More Terror Sponsor Than Strategic Partner
Despite sporadic condemnation of terrorism by King Abdullah, Saudi Arabians make-up the bulk of the foreign fighters in Iraq and provide the lion’s share of terrorist finances, write Nick Fielding and Sarah Baxter for the Sunday Times.
The government is accused of failing to penalize promoters of Jihad, such as the country’s Chief Justice, and to reform an educational system imparting hatred of other religions and societies. Saudi Arabia has been known to be a haven for radical Islamists for some time, including Osama Bin Laden, a trend some fear may be exacerbated by “bribes” given to radical elements in order to prevent terrorist acts.
In spite of efforts by Republican Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania to get the Saudi Arabia Accountability Act 10 through Congress, the Bush Administration is wary of actions that could “Iranize” Saudi Arabia in light of the country’s strategic importance.
