The EU has succeeded in convincing the Serbs not to place a resolution before the UN general assembly on the topic of the Kosovo. ++ The Serbs had intended to ask the assembly to condemn Kosovo’s independence as an incidence of separatism. ++ The EU is not thrilled by this idea, since most its members had supported the independence drive at the time. ++ The compromise between Lady Ashton and President Tadic now opens the door for talks between Belgrade and Pristina.

I'm not quite sure how Belgrade will proceed with its efforts to accession if it does not come to some sort of resolution on Kosovo. Although some EU members do not recognize Kosovo's independence and Serbian recognition of an independent Kosovo can't be made a condition to EU accession, it seems implausible that the EU would allow Serbia to join without an outright agreement on the status of Kosovo. Belgrade and Pristina must come to some sort of a compromise and make amends for the sake of each country's greater prosperity and role on an international scale.
