Small Victory for Democracy in Pakistan

Editorial, Dawn | March 18, 2009

Iftikhar Chaudhry will once again be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. ++ A peaceful campaign has been waged to uphold a central tenet of democracy, "the right for a constitutional office-holder to not be ousted in an unconstitutional manner." ++ Having returned to office, Chaudry will now feel pressure to become "the people's champion." ++ The reinstatement of Chaudry showed that democracy can function in Pakistan, but "the democratic project needs many more good days ahead if it is to succeed."
