Stopping Genocide in Sudan

Irwin Cotler, Former Attorney General of Canada | January 24, 2012

South Africa must resume its role as a mediator in Sudan. ++ Accelerating violence and the military seizure of Abyei by the Khartoum regime signal that war has restarted. ++ It is scandalous that three leading officials indicted for genocide, including President Omar al-Bashir, are still in office. ++ A targeted no-fly zone should be put in place in South Kordofan to stop the bombing and displacement of civilians. ++ The IMF should threaten to rescind the Sudanese government's loans unless it ceases it assaults.

I like this comment! What's this?
The allegations of genocide must be made carefully. It is quite an appropriate way to scratch a country's reputation for merely political reasons.
In Sudan case, an arrest warrant was issued by ICC for Omar al-Bashir. However, it was not enforced. After the division of Sudan into two parts, that warrant issue seemes to be forgotten completely. Therefore, it appears to me that this warrant issue was purely political in order to put pressure on Omar al-Bashir. With the division of Sudan, this aim was accomplished.
I do not claim that Omar al-Bashir is innocent for his alleged crimes but the rumors of crimes cannot be used to take a better deal for countries. First of all, it undermines and exploits the sufferings of innocent people. Furthermore, the authoritarian regimes can show the imperialist use of humanitarian values as examples to justify their brutal regimes.
