The Birth of Democracy in Iraq

The success of the Iraqi election shot down Washington's contention that democracy in Iraq was a fantasy and provided stark contrast to the post-Saddam days when “the only communal or social ties [...] were those of ethnicity and sect.” ++ In contrast to the last 6 years, Iraq now has a free press, political competition and secular politics which favor the US and leave Iran standing out in the cold. ++ It is now up to the US to cordially encourage Iraq to protect the longevity of its “small miracle in the heart of the Arab Middle East.”
