Anne Applebaum, The Washington Post | November 10, 2009
Many of the commemorations of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall focus on unsolved problems and take much of the past two decades as a foregone conclusion. ++ However, 20 years ago a united Germany seemed like an absurdity as did the notion of NATO expansion. ++ Although many awful things happened in the meantime, "the inhabitants of Central Europe are healthier, more prosperous and more integrated with the rest of the continent than they have been for centuries." ++ Let us not take these achievements for granted.
