The G8 is Losing Relevance

David Crane, The Chronicle Herald | July 18, 2008

We live in a global economy, yet we have no effective system to manage a global economy. ++ The G8 leaders like to think they can handle global challenges such as global warming. ++ Yet, the dispute between industrial and emerging market economies regarding cutting emissions showed the G8’s lack of efficiency. ++ There are different proposals for redesigning the G8; one suggestion is to include Saudi Arabia and South Africa for instance. ++ The priority must be to achieve a new consensus on how to manage the global system.
