The Lingering Sound of Obama's Speech

Editorial (in German), Süddeutsche Zeitung | July 25, 2008

The German government welcomes Obama's call for a renewal of transatlantic relations. ++ The reactions of the public are heterogeneous: some expected a key speech and were disappointed afterwards while others liked Obama's decision to speak as a citizen of the world. ++ Political scientist Langguth warned of a transfiguration of the US-German relationship. ++ No matter who will win the US election, the time of US unilateralism has ended and therefore allies such as Germany will be asked to take more responsibility in the future.
