The Pope Causes Controversy with Latest Comments

Adriano Sofri, La Repubblica (in Italian) | March 20, 2009

Half of the world has condemned the Pope's words on his African trip stating that condoms not only fail to resolve the AIDS problem but aggravate it. ++ This goes beyond the classical position of the church. ++ By proclaiming that condoms increase the AIDS problem the Pope is sabotaging the efforts of several professionals and volunteers to remedy the calamity towards sexual education and distribution of condoms. ++ AIDS is ravaging Africa and such a statement, even if pronounced by the Pope, is inadmissible.

I like this comment! What's this?
Such issues usually does bring a smile upon one's face. The issues behind AIDS as a scourge is not merely limited to certain risk-groups that accrues out from particular behaviour-patterns, but also the concomitant soci-economic environment that promotes such behaviour pattern. Many religious bodies, including the Roman Catholic Church, have positions that do seem to arise from a certain worldview that aspires to a 'spiritual' way of life. Perhaps the pronouncements may be familiar and make sense to those who understand the fundamentals behind such pronouncements. Fundamentals, which one would assume, to be in their ideal state of a certain enlightened view. History though shows the tremendous gaps that exists between the possible espousals of such 'values' and the world of such practioners, including the world at large. Between democracy and democratic ideals, the risk-group factors, and a certain espousal to a particular 'worldview' that one would assume to be a certain kind of enlightened 'spiritual' existence (like one has the Yogic mores about ethical life) or particular notions of 'ethical' life. It may be more helpful for the Pope or the Vatican to expound upon their reasons behind such statements so that the room for misunderstanding them is lessened. Perhaps the vatican can, alongwith other similar bodies that espouse particular views, help organise seminars or conferences at which the problem of ethics, development, and risk-group behaviour can be better explained, while strengthening democracy and the freedom of the individual. In manners that such discussions can be held publicly and with global participation - with the possibility of free participation by everyone interested in such discussions and views.
