The Syrians Take Paris

Andrew Lee Butters, Time | July 18, 2008

Syria is back in style. ++ The invitation to Paris is ostensibly a reward for the start of indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel. ++ But it also reveals that the West needs Syria to resolve the biggest problems in the Middle East. ++ The US and Israel still want Syria to stop supporting Hamas and Hezbollah and for it to end its strategic partnership with Iran. ++ In exchange, Assad wants a package deal which means that the US would have to give up its project for a “new” middle east and its penchant for regime change.
