The Threat of the New Middle East

Joschka Fischer, former German foreign minister | May 6, 2008

The old Middle East and the secular nationalism that went along with it is being replaced by a new, modern Middle East in which political Islam and anti-Western nationalism play a decisive role. ++ There is now a serious threat of "a confrontation between Iran and Saudi Arabia for sub-regional supremacy, and between Iran and the US for regional hegemony." ++ The entire state system in the Middle East could disintegrate, with Iraq leading the way. ++ It is likely that the New Middle East will be much more dangerous than its predecessor.

I like this comment! What's this?
The comments offered by the writer may possibly advocate the strategists-indoctrinated policies of the US and its allies regarding the theory of new Middle east. The realities in ground speak another advocacy for a different version or truth and that is that since the end of the cold war era, the continuous US-backed Israeli policies of coercion brinkmanship and the human rights violations on the one side and the arrogantly US- percieved policies of hard security doctrine- fervently supported by the managers of the realpolitik, on the other, has created the political turmoil in the region. The only alternative to prevent Middle east from the growing possibilities of the tug of war betwen the Islamic Jehadis and the westerners is to adopt the diplomacy that may ward off the ongoing differences that have been delibrately created by those policy makers whose view is to develope a situation of crisis management to gain their vested interests.
