The Turkmen Target

Simon Shuster, Time | December 1, 2009

A market wary Turkmenistan is slowly opening to foreign enterprise, but the West has not been greeted with open arms. ++ As the central Asian republic houses the fourth largest natural gas reserve, China, the West and the Muslim world are all vying for influence. ++ A fallout with Russia earlier this year over an exploding pipeline has led Turkmenistan to seek out other, more amenable partners. ++ It's a chance for the EU to diversify energy sources, and a well placed supply route for NATO. ++ The West must seek out a warmer welcome.
