The UK Was too Hasty to Free al-Megrahi
Jackie Ashley, The Guardian | August 24, 2009
The release of the Lockerbie bomber, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, is set to develop into a new political crisis for the British government. ++ The US backlash is disproportionate: given their record on the imprisonment of terrorist suspects they can hardly take the “moral high ground.” ++ Foreign Secretary David Miliband “might have reminded the US how pleased they were that Libya changed direction during the war on terror." ++ The decision was made, not by the Scottish parliament but by Downing Street in the interests of Libyan-UK trade.
