The US Economy: A Deep Concern for the Middle Class

The struggling US economy has become a critical issue for America’s current and future leadership. Robert Reich, a professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley and a former US secretary of labour, argues that presidential hopefuls need to recognize that "middle-class families have exhausted the coping mechanisms" which have kept them afloat since the 1970’s. Americans have coped with the fact that wages, adjusted for inflation, have barely increased in three decades by moving more women into the work force, working longer hours, and borrowing extensively. Whichever candidate is best able to recognize and address these underlying issues and introduce policies that would boost wages will be most popular amongst American voters. Financial Times, January 29, 2008.

I like this comment! What's this?
Time for a 'New Deal' for the middle class. Not only in the US but in all the developed nations, I think.
