US-India Nuclear Pact is Back on the Table
Bill Emmott, The Washington Post | July 9, 2008
The US-India nuclear pact, declared "almost certainly dead" last month, will probably be signed by the Indian government after all. ++ The onus of getting it implemented is therefore back on the US. ++ Congress must stop pressuring India into backing US policy on Iran. ++ India shouldn’t have to choose between good relations with itself and Tehran. ++ PM Manmohan Singh will not agree to toe the US line on Iran because it needs Iranian gas. ++ The US, however, needs good relations with India to balance the growing power of China in Asia.

India must take a stand against foreign pressures. She may need the US but the latter needs her much more as an ally against China. This is the understanding. whether it works if and when crunch comes remains to be seen. Nearing exit with a legacy of failed-policies, generally, the Administration must be desperate to get the deal registered as a success.
