US Sees Iran as Friend and Foe

Kaveh L Afrasiabi, Asia Times Online | October 21, 2010

The United States and Iran are bound in a strange relationship. ++ On one hand, the US lauded Iran's attendance at an international conference on Afghanistan, saying Tehran has a central role to play in that country's stability, while on the other, senior officials in the Obama administration referred to Iran as the "greatest challenge" to stability in the Middle East. ++ However, with the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, a new kind of “cooperation-conflict relationship” may emerge between the two to fill the power vacuum.
