We Must Condemn Chinese Crackdowns

Nicholas Bequelin, Human Rights Watch | April 8, 2011

Beyond routine crackdowns, China is attempting to redefine limits of expression and reverse civil society advances made over past decade. ++ Secret police have shifted to extrajudicial tactics, with a government spokesman warning "the law was not a shield" for those "creating trouble for China." ++ The international community must send "Unambiguous messages to Beijing that its conduct is unacceptable and illegal" because quiet diplomacy has failed and silence during early weeks of crackdown has invigorated authorities.
