" class="external">Where Our Interests Lie: Vying for West Africa's Oil
International disputes over West African oil — which represents about 10% of the world’s reserves — have been intensified by its easy accessibility, reports Stephanie Hanson of the Council of Foreign Relations. Growing oil wealth in the region has furthermore not necessarily brought good governance. Angola, for instance, is now the 2nd largest oil producer in West Africa, but remains near the bottom of both the UN’s human development index and Transparency International’s corruption index. The USA and China are currently deadlocked in debate over oil reserves in both Angola and the Sudan, with the Chinese pouring vast sums of money into the region and the US countering with plans for infrastructural development.
