Why Israel Needs An Independent Palestinian State

Gareth Evans, International Crisis Group | September 22, 2011

Since the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin, Israeli leaders have failed to embrace a far-sighted vision on the Israel-Palestine conflict. ++ To reinitiate the peace process, Israel should accept that only an independent Palestinian state will bring lasting peace to the region. ++ The UN vote on Palestinian statehood is an opportunity for Israel and its allies to improve relations with the Islamic world and restart negotiations. ++ By refusing to recognize Palestine as a state, Israel and the United States will be on the wrong side of history.
