Why is Wikileaks Only Targeting the West?

George Grant, The Telegraph | December 3, 2010

By making the West the focus of recent diplomatic disclosures, Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, betrays an agenda every bit as sinister as the one of which he accuses his enemies. ++ Where are the "Chinese embassy Cables", or the "Iran files"? ++ If recent disclosures were really about encouraging whistle blowing about issues that genuinely impact  human lives, instead of just weakening and embarrassing the United States, he would not be so reckless. ++ The truth of the matter is that this doesn’t really seem to be his objective at all.

Maybe it's just a matter of choices.

If there were sources in Iran or China willing to leak secret information, Wikileaks would release them as well, I suppose. I therefore consider the "anti-US political bias" argument as weak albeit they clearly have political goals. But as every principle, transparency of government has its borders, especially where people's life is at risk. They undertook measures to prevent this, though.

Wikileaks have targeted everyone not only the USA. But overall, the information is not new or shocking or surprising. A lot of the things released, we've known or could figure out with further analysis.

Diplomacy is often most effective when done in secret. Israeli-Egyptian peace and Libya’s ceasing of its nuclear program are both examples of positive events that resulted from secret diplomacy. Whistle-blowing is one thing—releasing information to reveal wrongdoing. What Assange has done is far beyond that. As the author indicates, Assange’s objectives are not very clear; however, if his objective is to reveal all secrets simply because they are secrets—his actions are unjustified. Secrets are necessary to effective diplomacy.
