Wildfires Warm Russia to Global Warming

Simon Shuster, TIME | August 4, 2010

In the past, the Kremlin has discredited the idea of global warming as international media hype. ++ Russia’s ruling elite has regarded the climate debate as nothing more than “an invention of the West to bring Russia to its knees.” ++ The current heat wave forces Russia’s rulers to rethink. ++ Even President Medvedev now admits that a link between global warming and the unusual weather phenomenon exists. ++ Chances are good that the Russian government will finally take steps to cut emissions.

I like this comment! What's this?
Umm...can we have some science here? A heat wave is WEATHER, global warming is a theory about climate. Weather does not equal climate, ever. Also, wildfires are caused by many things, not just hot weather...for example, disease and land use changes play a big role.

Climate is, of course, long term average weather...however, long term means 15-30 YEARS. One regional heat wave, no matter how intense or unprecedented, can tell you almost nothing about local or regional climate, and tells you exactly nothing about global climate.

Treating weather as climate is a form of cargo-cult science -- it looks and sounds like science, but it lacks a deep understanding and also lacks a certain moral integrity.
