Women Must Have More Prominence in UN Forces

Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General | June 2, 2009

UN member states should contribute more female personnel to the peacekeeping forces in line with efforts made to involve more local women in peacebuilding. ++ These efforts are not made for the sake of gender parity, but rather to draw on the unique contribution women can make. ++ Often, they can better communicate with local women, generating a greater sense of security and are an example of women's empowerment. ++ Female peacekeepers can also provide victims of sexual and gender based violence with support.
