World Falls Short on Aid to Afghanistan
Paddy Ashdown & Joseph Ingram | May 4, 2009
The international community is falling "woefully short" of financing Afghanistan's needs. ++ Security is better funded than any other sector including economic and social development. ++ If this continues, "the suffering of a very poor population will get worse, fuelling support for the fundamentalist insurgency that threatens the entire region". ++ Aid must be increased and managed by the Afghan Government, not individual donor countries. ++ There are gross inefficiencies in the way aid to Afghanistan is being handled.
