The Defense Policy Spokesperson of the FDP Parliamentary Group Elke Hoff has responded to our call for letters of encouragement to German soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, within the framework of the Feldpost campaign launched by Atlantische Initiative e.V. and Bild.de. Ever since 2002, the German Bundestag has renewed the ISAF mandate for Afghanistan on a yearly basis. The mission, which we dispatched you on, represents not only a professional challenge, but also means that you risk your life and well-being every day. For your relatives, it means constant fear and worry.
I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for the bravery and high level of commitment you display in this mission and wish to convey to you my great personal respect for your service.
I realize that certain aspects of the ongoing discussion surrounding Afghanistan in Germany weigh heavily on you as well. Only very few members of the public or the parliament are afforded the opportunity of getting to know what the operational realities and daily life is like in Afghanistan, in the camps and beyond. As a result, they wrongly judge many aspects of the mission. This in turn can lead to great disappointment on your part when, as you return home full of the impressions and burdened by difficult experiences, you find that nobody really understands you. We need to develop greater understanding and demonstrate more patience on both sides: We here in Germany for our soldiers deployed on a most difficult mission, and you for all those who simply cannot know what the situation is really like on the ground in Afghanistan.
In order to overcome the internal and external barriers, we need to talk to one another and to listen to the other person. I have been to Afghanistan over ten times already, and I personally continue to be convinced of the justice and importance of the mission. This irrespective of the many mistakes that have been made on all sides in the past, be it because of an overestimation of one's own capabilities or a misjudgement of the situation. We as a member of the 47-nation coalition have pledged ourselves to protect the Afghans and to make a life in peace possible for them. We must live up to our obligations together. I wish to thank you and your families in particular for carrying the main burden in fulfilling this duty.
For this reason, I will always have an open ear for your concerns and intend to do all I can here in Berlin so that you will be able to carry out the mission, which we dispatched you on with our votes, and return home safe and sound. For those who are not as fortunate to return home in the best of health, my colleagues and I will do everything in order to ease your reintegration into a normal existence. I will always honor the memory of those soldiers who gave their lives in the course of this mission.
I wish you the best of luck and hope for a healthy and safe homecoming to your loved ones.

Liebe Soldatinnen, liebe Soldaten,
seit dem Jahr 2002 erteilt der Deutsche Bundestag alljährlich aufs Neue das ISAF-Mandat für Afghanistan. Dieser Einsatz, in den wir Sie entsenden, bedeutet neben einer großen soldatischen Herausforderung auch die ständige Gefährdung für Ihr Leben und für Ihre Gesundheit. Er bedeutet für Ihre Angehörigen Furcht und Sorge.
Dafür, dass Sie diesen Einsatz so bravourös und mit so hoher Einsatzbereitschaft annehmen, möchte ich Ihnen von Herzen danken und mit diesen wenigen Worten meinen großen persönlichen Respekt zum Ausdruck bringen.
Ich weiß, dass manche politische Diskussion um Afghanistan hier in Deutschland auch auf Ihnen lastet, denn nur die wenigsten aus der Bevölkerung oder aus dem Parlament haben wirklich eine Chance, die Einsatzrealität im Camp und außerhalb sowie den Alltag in Afghanistan aus nächster Nähe zu erleben und kennen zu lernen. Dadurch, dass dabei manches falsch bewertet wird, kann eine große Enttäuschung auf Ihrer Seite entstehen, besonders dann, wenn man vollgepfropft mit Eindrücken und schwierigen Erfahrungen wieder in die Heimat zurückkehrt und niemand einen so richtig versteht. Wir alle müssen für diese Situation mehr gegenseitiges Verständnis und mehr Geduld miteinander entwickeln: Wir hier für unsere Soldatinnen und Soldaten in einem schweren Einsatz und Sie für all diejenigen, die nicht wissen können, wie es wirklich vor Ort aussieht.
Miteinander reden und sich gegenseitig zuhören ist daher sicher ein gutes Rezept, diese inneren und äußeren Schranken zu überwinden. Mehr als zehn Mal war ich bisher in Afghanistan und ich bin persönlich nach wie vor von der Wichtigkeit und Richtigkeit dieses Einsatzes überzeugt. Auch wenn in der Vergangenheit viele, manchmal zu viele Fehler auf allen Seiten gemacht wurden, sei es aus Selbstüberschätzung oder aus Fehleinschätzung. Wir, das heißt 47 Nationen, haben uns aber gegenüber den Afghanen verpflichtet, sie zu schützen und Ihnen ein Leben in Frieden zu ermöglichen. Diese Verpflichtung müssen wir auch gemeinsam erfüllen und ich möchte Ihnen ganz besonders dafür danken, dass Sie und Ihre Familien dabei die Hauptlast tragen.
Deshalb werde ich stets ein offenes Ohr für Ihre Belange haben und mich hier in Berlin dafür einsetzen, dass Sie Ihren Auftrag, den wir Ihnen mit unserer Stimme erteilen, erfüllen können und eine gesunde Heimkehr möglich ist. Auch für all diejenigen Soldaten, die nicht das Glück hatten, unversehrt zurückzukehren, werde ich gemeinsam mit meinen Kollegen alles daran setzen, Ihnen die Rückkehr in ein normales Leben zu erleichtern. Und allen Kameraden, die in diesem Einsatz gefallen sind, werde ich in meinem Herzen stets ein ehrendes Andenken erhalten.
Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Soldatenglück und eine gesunde und sichere Heimkehr zu den Menschen, die Ihnen am meisten bedeuten.
