US in Iraq: Is the International Community Needed?

Natalia Ruban :

During the recent international conference on Iraq in Sweden, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice tried to persuade potential contributors to help Iraq, and get the Arab states to fully recognize the country by opening embassies.

She pointed out that the reconstruction of Iraq "is not just an obligation of the United States. The international community, because of that history, has an obligation to help the Iraqis get on their feet." Especially, because the security situation has "significantly" improved.

So, do you agree with her? Is it a time for the international community to step in? Or is it first and foremost the responsibility of the United States, as it attacked Iraq without a UN mandate or any prior approval?

Considering the extremely high oil prices, the question of financial support for Iraq is also interesting. Should Iraq's foreign debts be forfeited, as the Iraqi prime minister and US officials request? Or should oil revenues remain the main source of financial support? What is your opinion?

Good Luck to Dr.Rice. If the situation had really "significantly" improved,
her officers belonging to the Mission in Iraq would not be hiding in the Green Zone like countless other beneficiaries of thie ilk.

And of course Bagdhad is the only true measure of the 'situation' eh? The fact that cities in the 'Sunni Triangle' Rallujah et al have pacified themselves and violence has decreased dramatically in those -laces - they doesn't count at all. Only the places where the Mahdi Army holds sway count....

I'm glad your benchmark is not the Kurd area.
I'll be more than glad if Iraq gains some stability as propagated every now and then to fool public opinion at home. Which Iraqi Govt can survive if it tries to whitewash over a million Iraqis killed killed and the destruction of Iraq under'occupation? what will become of the 'surrogates'?
Saddam was a terrible dictator but can one justify, if one has a conscience, the atrocities committed in/after removing him in the name of WMD/ 'democracy. It has harmed the US itself and pulled her down the world over. George W may pass out as a whimper but the blood his Adminstartion spilled would remain the 'out damn'd spot' of Lady Macbeth' fame , as per the great Shakespearian tragedy; among the world as well as the goodguys in the US.
