Term Paper: What Next for NATO?

Rachel J Emery: Many academics and journalists have put forth their own views on the future direction of NATO. However, what stills needs to be taken into account is that expansion of the Alliance’s scope beyond the immediate Euro-Atlantic area is not necessary in the current post Cold War security environment

This paper is a critical response to "NATO's New Mission: Projecting Stability in a Post Cold War World", by Rebecca R. Moore (Praeger Security Int., 2007).

Questions of NATO’s purpose post-cold war and indeed the imperatives of its mission, along with the policies needed to implement its agenda have led to an increasing number of scholars commenting about programs required for the Alliance's survival.

The following paper deals with one such viewpoint, from Rebecca R. Moore, which will be briefly analyzed before providing my own critique on the future of the organization. The main thrust behind this work is that NATO's expansion beyond the immediate Euro-Atlantic area is not necessary for its survival in this new post-cold war security environment.

Rachel Emery is a student at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
