Interview with Andrew Hammel: US calls for German troops in southern Afghanistan primarily have a “symbolic meaning,” says Andrew Hammel, who teaches Anglo-American Law at Heinrich Heine University and runs the popular blog “German Joys.”



According to Andrew Hammel, American presidents need to be seen as trying to get more European troops: "American politicians always need some kind of symbolic issue with European partners to maintain the idea that there is some distance between the American and European political orders." These policy disputes do not effect other transatlantic cooperation.

Even an increase in Euro-bashing in the conservative blogosphere, resulting after a European refusal to share more of the burden, will not have significant political consequences, says Andrew Hammel of German Joys in this video interview with Atlantic-community.org:
