Internship with Atlantic-Community.org in Berlin
Atlantic-community.org is seeking interns for its editorial team. We have internship positions available beginning on May 3, June 1, and August 2, 2010 (one position per respective start date). All internships last three months, with a possibility to extend. Applicants must be eligible to work in Germany.
As the first online think tank on foreign relations, atlantic-community.org connects experts and citizens for informed policy debate to find solutions to global challenges. Founded in 2007, atlantic-community.org is an award-winning joint project of two independent, non-partisan, non-profit organizations - Atlantische Initiative e.V. in Berlin and Atlantic Initiative U.S. - a 501(c)(3) status organization based in Washington, D.C.
What we offer:
- Experience of all aspects of production at an online publication: research, writing, editing, marketing, etc.
- Publication under your name on a website frequented by an international audience of think tankers, journalists, students, professors, junior and senior researchers, and government staff
- A workplace close to the Brandenburg Gate, German parliament and chancellory, as well as a flexible working environment with flat hierarchies and a young, highly motivated team open to new ideas from interns
- 200 Euro per month for a full-time internship for a minimum of three months. Unpaid part-time internships are available as well
- Significant responsibility, intensive teamwork, and substantial support and mentoring
What you will do:
- Monitor newspapers and think tank publications from around the world for nascent trends in international relations and condense the main arguments into brief summaries
- Edit articles submitted by members of atlantic-community.org, in some cases translating into English
- Support outreach, marketing, and networking for atlantic-community.org
- Research and write your own feature articles on issues of transatlantic importance and conduct expert surveys and interviews
Applicants should have:
- Enthusiasm for online debates and social media, including demonstrated participation on atlantic-community.org
- Intensive knowledge of international affairs beyond the issues that dominate the headlines and a keen interest in transatlantic relations. We prefer candidates with a background in political science, economics, or a related discipline
- Strong English writing skills, including journalistic and/or editorial experience. German language skills are a plus, but not required
- Commitment to delivering quality results and ability to work precisely under time pressure in a team and at own initiative. You should be a quick learner, dependable, and very well organized
- Extensive computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Firefox, Photoshop, or equivalent programs
- Previous work experience with online media (your own blog for instance) would be an advantage; familiarity with content management systems and basic HTML knowledge are especially valued
We look forward to receiving your cover letter and CV (in English). Please also include a writing sample, which should be an essay or a term paper on international politics in English -- or write your own Op-Ed on a topic of your choice, which might even get published on atlantic-community.org.
