Event Announcement: The 109th Presseball Berlin - January 12, 2008

The upcoming Presseball Berlin is beginning to take shape. The social highlight of the ball season, for the first time under its new management, will take place on 12th January 2008 in the recently renovated Maritim Hotel Berlin in the Stauffenbergstraße. This year's Presseball Berlin will serve as a starting event for the festivities accompanying the 60th Anniversary of Israel's independence in Germany. Themed "Shalom Israel," the 109th Presseball will feature the host country's multifaceted character. The proceeds of this year's annual tombola will go to "(external)Sapir College":http://www.sapir.ac.il/generalpage.asp?div=english in Israel. Located near the south-Israeli town of Sderot, and thus close to the Gaza strip, the college symbolizes David Ben Gurion's dream of a blooming and prosperous desert. Based in the Western Negev, a rather inhospitable border region, this cultural and communal center serves as the region's biggest employer and with 7,500 students is also the largest public college in Israel. Yet the college and its surroundings have been the target of daily bombardment by Gaza militants. The college alone has been hit by over 150 Qassam rockets over the last few years. Despite all of this, the college is unique in its role as a seminal and visionary pillar and bridge for all parts of the Israeli community, for example through its counseling center, which supports traumatized victims. To strengthen the local communities and encourage the college to maintain its role as a living expression of independence and freedom, Sapir College requires your financial support. The event's organisers, Andreas Dorfmann and Marina Schill, announced that the Presseball Berlin will, as always, be one of the most important events of the year in the German capital. The ball will be attended by numerous guests of honour and dignitaries, and will for the first time feature two separate orchestras to ensure a flashy and lavish night. In addition, Andrej Hermlin and his Swing Dance Orchestra, as well as the German Bundeswehr's Big Band, will provide musical entertainment. A very limited number of tickets, which include food, as well as drinks (wine, champagne, beer, etc.) are still available.
