Global Youth Assembly, John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, July 30th-August 2nd

The Global Youth Assembly
The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights and its partners from across Canada and the world will welcome 1000 youth and young professionals aged 16 to 28 from around the world to the Ignite Change Now! Global Youth Assembly (GYA)
2009 in Edmonton, Canada from July 30th to August 2nd. The GYA is a dynamic social forum that provides a space for youth of diverse socio-economic, cultural, educational, and geographical backgrounds to come together for four days of inspiring keynotes, skill development workshops, a Shop 4 Change Show, a concert, a film night, and much, much more. In 2011, the GYA will be held in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, Canada.

Aim
The GYA focuses on strengthening youth capacity to make a shift from awareness to action so that youth can affect positive change in their communities and the world. Opportunities for creative expression during the conference, follow-up after the conference, and, most of all, partnerships are what make the GYA such a success.
Delegates leave with new perspectives, new found confidence, new partnership, and the tools and resources to make a difference in their communities and the world through concrete project ideas and pledges to get engaged in community development.

We are seeking partners in Europe to enlarge the reach of the GYA and add to its dynamic nature with new ideas and representation of youth voices across the European continent. How can we best engage European youth and youth organizations to build bridges across the Atlantic? Rarely do PhD students and at risk youth; aboriginal and non-aboriginal youth; youth with and with disabilities; science and art students; and yes, Canadian and European youth get together in one room, let alone talk about issues that matter to them and work towards change in this kind of a space so open to diversity and creativity and so focused on action. The GYA builds a youth community founded on the values of
diversity, creativity, and action.

Any information or ideas that you can provide on how to work with European youth and youth groups and who to contact would be much appreciated.

See you in Edmonton in 2009!
