Human Rights, Development and Economic Growth - Metrics, New Ways of Thinking, and New Strategies Conference
————
April 7 - 8, 2011 The Elliott School, Washington, DC
Albert Einstein once noted that “not everything that counts can be counted.” Yet to evaluate the effects of policies and strategies, activists, policymakers, and scholars need to be able to measure change in human rights and development over time. This free two day conference is organized by the Institute for International Economic Policy of the Elliott School of International Affairs, GWU. We will examine new human rights and development metrics from a wide range of sources including the UNDP; the Bertelsmann Foundation; CIRI (SUNY Binghamton); Global Integrity; the World Bank; and others. In addition, we will focus on how scholars, business leaders, development activists, and policy makers are using these tools. Finally, we will debate how to improve these metrics and make them both more accurate and useful.
Speakers include:
Congresswoman Donna Edwards, Executive Committee Member, Lantos Human Rights Commissions, U.S. Congress
Gerard Pachoud, Special Advisor, UN Special Representative on Business and Human Rights
Jeni Klugman, UNDP
Thomas Kelly, Millennium Challenge Corporation
Dani Kaufmann, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution
