Panel Discussion: German-Israeli Security Relations

The German-Israeli Security Relations - Past, Present, Future

Thursday, September 18, 2008, 7:00 pm
Representation of the Free State of Thuringia in the Federation
Mohrenstraße 64, Berlin

To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the State of Israel, the Bundesverband Sicherheitspolitik an Hochschulen (BSH - German Academic Association for Security Studies) is dedicating its main project to the analysis of the German-Israeli Security Relations.

An international and interdisciplinary group of authors from Israel, Germany and the United States has contributed to the BSH’s fifth anthology in its series “Wissenschaft und Sicherheit” (“Science and Security”). As indicated by its title, the anthology – edited by political scientist Milena Uhlmann, prefaced by Avi Primor and published in September 2008 at the Berliner Wissenschaftsverlag - provides the current state of research with a comprehensive picture of the past, present and future of the German-Israeli Security Relations. In the different contributions, the 18 authors of German, Israeli and American nationality thereby mainly analyze the historic-political background and the strategic context of the security relations between the two countries, as well as the institutions and policy branches relevant for the latter. The anthology for instance both covers the role of the secret services and German-Israeli armaments cooperation projects. Other aspects which are dealt with in the anthology include civilian security, cooperation in justice affairs, bilateral weapons’ trade and Israeli media coverage.

To celebrate the publication of the anthology, the BSH is holding a panel discussion on the German-Israeli security relations. A reception as well as an open discussion and informal exchange with panelists and authors of the anthology will follow.
