The United States Meets Europe: Washington D.C. & New York City, 18th - 24th April 2010
The United States Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders (USAME) is a network of young, influential people from both sides of the Atlantic who have an active interest in supporting the relationship between the United States and Europe.
Next USAME Weeklong Seminar will take place in Washington D.C. & New York City, 18th - 24th April 2010 and will focus on the theme:
- “New Priorities, New Strategies: Soft Power, Cultural Diplomacy and American Foreign Policy”
In addition to looking in greater detail at the history and development of cultural diplomacy, the next USAME Weeklong Seminar will look at how the priorities of U.S. foreign policy have changed since the end of the Cold War and are continuing to evolve. This will provide a framework for discussions on contemporary transatlantic relations, and for comparing and contrasting foreign policy priorities in the U.S. and Europe. The program will focus in particular on the following areas:
- The history and development of transatlantic relations since 1945, focusing in particular on the Marshall Plan, the city of Berlin, and the changing nature of relations since 1989.
- The use of cultural diplomacy and soft power by the U.S. during the Cold War, and the importance this played in determining its outcome.
- The similarities and differences between the foreign policy drivers and strategies in the U.S. and Europe, looking in particular at the application of cultural diplomacy.
- The development of U.S. foreign policy priorities over the past two decades, with a particular focus on the objectives of the new U.S. administration and the strategies employed to pursue these objectives.
