Welfare, Gender, and Agency in Russia and Eastern Europe

Aleksanteri Conference

“WELFARE, GENDER, AND AGENCY IN RUSSIA AND EASTERN EUROPE

Helsinki University, 10-12 December, 2008
Plenum venue: Helsinki University Museum Arppeanum, Snellmaninkatu 3

8th annual Aleksanteri Conference will bring together researchers from fifteen countries across the dissolved East-West divide to examine the interrelationships of welfare, gender and agency in Russia and Eastern Europe during the transitional period. The approach is more multidimensional than usual - in addition to economic and social problems the agenda also includes bodily and sexual issues. The themes discussed during the conference are for instance post-socialist welfare models, welfare services, ethnicity and migration, gender, civil society and agency, national welfare policies and transnational perspectives.

Seventy workshop presentations and the satellite seminar at STAKES (National Development and Research Centre for Welfare and Health), with a number of highly-qualified development specialists, will enrich and challenge the views and insights of the plenum sessions.

The conference is connected to the `Welfare, Gender and Agency in Russia in the 2000s (WGA)´ project, and to the sectors of welfare and democracy in the Institute´s new research program: http://www.helsinki.fi/aleksanteri/wga/
