Burqa Debate in Spain Misses Point

Editorial, El Pais (in Spnaish) | June 17, 2010

The Spanish government is finally facing up to demands to outlaw the burqa in public places. ++ “Only a calm debate… is capable of shedding light on a subject that doubtlessly is a cause of concern to our citizens.” ++ However, the debate ignores the underlying problems. ++ For one, the veil “restricts a woman in her personal rights.” ++ Second, the debate must address the integration of immigrant groups in difficult economic times. ++ The prohibitionist rhetoric merely demonstrates the failure of Spanish politicians to explain the problem in its full scope.
