Draining the Terrorist Swamp in Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the terrorist organization’s franchise in Yemen, must be countered with a comprehensive strategy that stresses local development along with diplomacy and defense. ++ Understanding the needs of AQAP’s potential recruitment base is vital. ++ A focus on preventive measures will strengthen the social contract and provide the most sustainable response to terrorism. ++ “In the contest of legitimacy between the government of Yemen and AQAP, the side that has an impact on young people’s lives will win.”

In order to combat Al Qaeda in Yemen, there needs to be more focus on understanding the environment- the country Yemen itself, and why it is so attractive to al-Qaeda. It is almost like a safe-haven for terrorists to organize as the country is in near desolation. As the poorest country in the region with problems of water scarcity, unemployment, influx of Somalian refugees, the Northern and Southern conflict the government faces, and a huge problem of arms trafficking, Yemen is occupied with its' own domestic problems. The U.S. needs to understand Yemen's priorities, and work in a diplomatic manner to come up with a comprehensive strategy that benefits both Yemen as well as the U.S. in combating AQAP.
