How to Win Afghanistan

Bing West, The Wall Street Journal | July 30, 2009

If the western coalition wants to win the war in Afghanistan in the long term, they have to let the Afghans do their own fighting. ++ "The Taliban are Afghans, to be dealt with by Afghans" and the West "shouldn’t make this a NATO war, allowing the Afghans to stand back." ++ To make the Afghans properly deal with the situation, local forces need to be built up even more. ++ To this end, Afghan forces will need billions of dollars in aid for another decade and the West is well advised to provide this money.

I like this comment! What's this?
One agrees that Afghanistan is a question for the Afghans to be solved by the Afghans. The Taliban came into existence not via compulsory conscription. It is not a NATO war and as far as the aid is concerend - it should be proportional to the extent of the responsibilities of the states that have caused it - even though Afghanistan was no Switzerland ever.
The neighbouring states would need to be able to prevent any spillover to their regions - of the Afghan problem. Maybe thsoe states should be aided in defending themselves against a possible spill-over clothed in some Jehad Tee Shirt.
