Terrorism Threat Map Shows New Difficulties in Calculating Business Risk
The Aon CorporationBusiness companies now face global risks which change faster and more often than before, making country-by-country interpretation difficult. As a result, the danger that terrorism poses to economic investment remains high, especially in many unstable regions of the world. The Aon Corporation’s Terrorism Risk Map 2007 provides a visual guide to risk management for international business, judging threats in over 200 countries to present the aggregate risk of terrorism in each state.
Changes in the terrorism threat level for 2007 are largely due to the downfall of al-Qaeda as an umbrella organization: terrorist groups are increasingly splintered and have a harder time coordinating plans. While this has reduced the terror threat in some areas, there is also a downside. Efforts directed against one radical group in a particular place are not as effective on an international level anymore, despite increasing cooperation among international authorities and intelligence services.
According to the map, the risk of terrorism has fallen in 23 states (including Israel, Ireland and war-torn Liberia) since 2006. The risk level in 22 countries has been elevated, including pivotal states such as India and Iran, as well as four Western nations: Great Britain, France, Norway and Canada.
The plans and the ability of radical groups to conduct terrorist acts are evaluated in order to determine the probability of an attack occurring. Countries are color-coded according to the level of threat conditions, and icons illustrate the different types of terrorist groups. Cities at particular risk are highlighted.

Bangladesh, Canada, Central African Republic, Chad, Columbia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, France, India, Iran, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Norway, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom.

Estonia, Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Cambodia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Usbekistan, Venezuela, Cyprus.
