The US Should Talk to North Korea

Joel S. Wit, The New York Times | May 20, 2010

Despite the fact that Obama pledged to engage with rouge states diplomatically, the White House has failed to begin a dialogue with North Korea. ++ "Sustained diplomatic engagement is the only way to encourage the North to moderate its threatening behavior." ++ The U.S. should begin talks with Kim Jong-il and "... mount a gradual pragmatic effort to engage in new discussions, not as a reward for bad behavior or to talk for the sake of talking, but to make us more secure. ++ America should recognize diplomatic dialogue is in our best interest.

The problem is that it's hard to find any reasonable arguments for a dialogue with North Korea at the moment. First of all South Korea itself prefers now to step into war threatening discourse nowadays. President Lee does not want its economy to be influenced by any serious political conflict right now, especially while expecting a global leaders meeting in November.

The South Korea naval incident has brought about a lot tension between the two Koreas, and the U.S. However much the U.S. tries to engage in dialogue with North Korea, it remains difficult as the current situation demonstrates. Due to disappointed remarks by North Korea following discussions by top U.S. representatives, the U.S. and South Korea initiated joint military routine exercises to display their power. I personally do not believe this was the best strategy, as North Korea is now, again, ever-threatening. At this point, I think the U.S. should recognize that diplomacy, negotiations and patience is what will lead to a compromised solution or any kind of discussion once again that involves North Korea. South Korea, on the otherhand, has its own domestic problems at the moment that revolves around this case. Due to the slow progress and efficiency covering the naval incident which happened in March, the President has endured many criticisms by the population. The president's rising unpopularity remains.
