Assistant Professor, Santa Clara University

The History Department at Santa Clara University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship, pending funding, effective fall 2011, in the history of Africa and the Atlantic World. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach courses both in the history of Africa and in the history of Africans in diaspora (North America) as well as in the Core Curriculum (Introductory-level global Cultures and Ideas, Cultures and Ideas 3 [African history], and Diversity [United States] courses). Candidates able to contribute to multidisciplinary majors and minors, including but not limited to Ethnic Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies, are particularly sought. We are also very interested in faculty able to contribute to Santa Clara's Residential Learning Communities.

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara is a Jesuit, Catholic university committed to promoting social justice in a liberal arts educational setting. Complete applications must be received by 18 October 2010 to be considered. Selected applicants will be contacted for Skype interviews in late November and on-campus interviews before the end of fall quarter.

Requirements:

  1. The completion of a Ph.D. in Africa or Atlantic history, with ability to teach African American history. ABDs who will complete the degree by the beginning of the contract date may be considered.
  2. Evidence of effective university-level teaching.
  3. Evidence of ability to publish in peer-reviewed venues in the areas articulated above.
