Delegation of the European Commission in Damascus


Intern in Press and Information Team

The Delegation of the European Commission in Damascus invites candidates to apply for the unpaid post of Press and Information Intern/Stagiere, for a contract of 4-6 months. The foreseen starting date is on 1 September 2008.

Tasks will cover:
· Assist in updating the Delegation website - in English and/or Arabic: www.delsyr.ec.europa.eu

· Report and write short articles on EU-Syrian Cooperation, including events organised by EU-funded projects and on visits of EU officials and parliamentarians.

· Report and write “case studies” on EU-funded projects.

· Assist in the production of the quarterly Delegation Newsletter.

· Provide logistical support and participate in press relations activities, e.g. Press Conferences, press briefings, press trainings on EU-matters.

· Internet research on EU-Syrian cooperation related matters.

· Assist in updating the Documentation Centre and presenting it to external visitors.

· Assist in the project and internal distribution and stock-keeping of promotional and information material.

· Assist in keeping the Press and Information database updated.

· If bilingual in Arabic-English, occasional translation and interpretation work.


Required Experience & Skills:
· Excellent reading, writing and speaking skills in English. Excellent or working-level reading, writing and speaking skills in Arabic is a very strong asset.

· Minimum of equivalent of Bachelor’s Degree - in journalism, communications, international relations, political science, or related field.

· Word processing skills, ability to operate softwares such as Excel, Word, Access and other applications.

· Professional and/or volunteer experience in the field of journalism and/or communications would be an asset.

· Knowledge of European Union policies and programmes, in particular the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.

· Interest in Mediterranean region and countries. Experience studying and/or working in the region is an asset.

· Team work skills especially within a multicultural and multilingual environment

· Creativity, flexibility, and ability to work under stress.

Candidates must be aware that the Delegation does not pay any salary or retribution for Intern positions.


Intern in Economic Cooperation and Human Development Sections

The Delegation of the European Commission in Damascus invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Intern / Stagiaire. Two candidates will be accepted and will be working at the Economic Cooperation Section and the Human Development Sections, respectively, for a period of 4 to 6 months. The foreseen starting date is on 1 September 2008. Remuneration cannot be paid.

Required Experience & Skills:
· Minimum of equivalent of Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Management, Law, Political Science, Development Studies, Sociology, Education, Infrastructure, Environment, or other relevant discipline.

· Word processing skills, ability to operate software such as Excel, Word, Access and other applications.

· Professional and/or volunteer experience in the field of development and project management would be an asset.

· Knowledge of European Union policies and programmes in the field of external relations would be an asset.

· Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English. Arabic and other EU languages would be an asset.

· Team work skills especially within a multicultural and multilingual environment


Description of Tasks
· The selected candidates will be assisting the sections in project/programme management and cooperation activities.

· This includes tasks related to the Identification, Formulation, Implementation, Evaluation and Auditing of new and ongoing projects, such as evaluation of reports, selection of experts and supporting the progress of the projects administratively in conformity with EC procedures.

· Other tasks include correspondence, drafting documents and speeches as well as reports.

· The Delegation of the European Commission in Damascus works in close connection with its EU-Member States, Syrian Authorities and International partners. Therefore the candidates will be expected to have an interest to participate in events and meetings of EU projects and partners.
