Resident Artist, Amherst College

The Amherst College Department of Art and the History of Art invites applications for a Resident Artist in Film, Video, and New Media, with specialization in two or more of the following areas: experimental, documentary, and/or narrative film/video production; sound design; installation; animation; interactive technologies; and new media formats.  We are seeking an artist with an MFA, teaching experience and a significant record of distinguished artistic production.  This faculty member will serve as one of two faculty anchors for a new interdisciplinary major in Film and Media Studies. Candidates should be prepared to teach a range of courses (two in each semester), including team-taught fundamental courses in the major with a Critical Studies faculty member as well as introductory film or video courses; advise honors students; and participate in the life of the college.  This is a renewable three-year contract designed as a permanent line, with the potential to advance to Senior Resident Artist after six years. The faculty member hired will have the benefits and responsibilities of tenure-track faculty. Candidates who submit their materials by December 1, 2010, will be assured full consideration.

Applicants should electronically submit as text documents the following to lmbecketto(AT)amherst.edu: a personal statement, CV, sample syllabi, and a digital portfolio of the candidate's work (please see note). In addition, they should arrange to have three confidential letters of recommendation, addressed to the Film, Video and New Media Search Committee, sent to Louise Beckett, Academic Department Coordinator, lmbeckett(AT)amherst.edu.

Note: For portfolios, still images may be sent electronically to the above address. Time-based work should preferably be submitted through a link to a secure posting on Vimeo.com or an online portfolio.  If the latter is a personal Website, please include specific link/s to the relevant material. An acceptable alternative would be a universally readable DVD (both Mac & pc compatible - please no Blu-Ray). Kindly send two copies to Louise Beckett, Department Coordinator, Department of Art and the History of Art, 107 Fayerweather Hall, Amherst College, Amherst, MA 01002-5000.
