Senior Mediation Experts Wanted
The *Norwegian Refugee Council* (NRC), in cooperation with the *UN Department of Political Affairs Mediation Support Unit* (DPA/MSU) is seeking *Senior Mediation Experts* to assist and support the UN’s and its international partners’ mediation efforts.
*Closing date: 30. September 2007*
We are seeking a team leader to:
* Act in an advisory capacity to the head of the mediation team or the appropriate senior official;
* Coordinate a small mediation team, and directly participate in mediation talks when appropriate;
* Identify priorities for the team’s liaison with the parties and other stakeholders;
* As necessary and appropriate, undertake extensive consultations with all key stakeholders, national governments, rebel movements, tribal leaders, the civil society, and regional actors;
* Draft or participate in the drafting of relevant necessary documents, including peace agreements;
We are seeking senior mediation experts in:
* Security arrangements
* Transitional justice and human rights
* Constitution-making in the context of comprehensive peace
* Wealth-sharing and economic arrangements
* Power-sharing arrangements
Main role and responsibilities
The main responsibility of the mediation expert is to assist and support the mediation team, the observers and the parties to the mediation by:
* Providing technical expertise and advice within the area of expertise;
* As necessary and appropriate, participating in the mediation talks and contributing to the drafting of relevant sections of the peace agreements and other documents;
* If necessary, conceiving, planning and managing specific trainings seminars for the parties and mediators in area of expertise;
* Preparing periodic reports for the head of the mediation team as well as the Mediation Support Unit of DPA on issues related to their area of expertise in the context of overall negotiations.
* Producing operational guidance notes and related training materials in the area of expertise;
* Carrying out research and coordinating lessons learned reviews in the area of expertise;
* Building and managing a network of experts in the area of expertise.
Contract period: 12 months
Salary/benefits: At a level equivalent to UN P-5 (UN D-2 for Team Leader)
