Transatlantic Academy Resident Fellowship - German Marshall Fund of the United States

The German Marshall Fund of the United States is seeking candidates to serve as resident Fellows at the new Transatlantic Academy (TA) in Washington, D.C. Located at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Academy, the TA is a joint initiative of GMF and the Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius ZEIT Stiftung of Hamburg. It brings together scholars from Europe and North America to work on a single set of issues facing the transatlantic community, which will change on a yearly basis The Academy is an interdisciplinary institution which is open to all social science disciplines.
Fellows will be resident for between six to ten months
beginning in October 2008. The Academy welcomes applications for the 2008-2009 academic year from scholars working on the movement of peoples and how these movements are affecting North American and European societies.
Specifically, proposals which focus on one or more of the following are encouraged:
* Integration of immigrants: Including concepts of inclusion, diversity, (post ethnic) civic nationalism in Europe and North America, examination of experience in the southern peripheries of Europe and the US from Northern African countries into the EU and Latin American countries to the US.
* Development of sustainable migration policy regimes: including an examination of the consequences of the currently applied "welcome the skilled, rotate the unskilled"-policy of most Western countries.
* Migration, civil liberties and security: including the nexus of migration, terrorism and crime in Europe and North America.
* Data analysis: Analysis of survey research data on attitudes relating to migration, perception of immigrants and the economic impact of migration in western societies.
Four senior and two junior scholars, three from Europe and three from north America, will work in a collaborative environment. They will present their own research and react to the work of their colleagues on a regular basis. They will also discuss their research with policy makers, non governmental organizations and other policy oriented institutions, both in the United States and Europe.
Fellowship Awards:
Fellow awards may range up to $110,000. Other sources of income may be taken into account when determining the fellowship amount. Housing costs must be taken from the fellowship award. Travel to and from Washington DC will be
included for the fellow, spouse, and any additional dependents. Health benefits will be provided if needed.
Junior Fellow awards will total $50,000. Housing costs must be taken from the fellowship award. Travel to and from Washington DC will be included for the fellow, spouse, and any additional dependents. Health benefits will be provided if needed.

Fellows:
* Academic candidates holding a PhD
* Academic candidates with publications beyond their doctoral dissertation
* English proficiency to facilitate the collaborative nature of the Transatlantic Academy
Junior Fellows:
* Academic candidates holding a PhD or those in the final stages of dissertation work.
* English proficiency to facilitate the collaborative nature of the Transatlantic Academy
*Selection Process and Criteria:*
Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications will be subject to an interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee, comprised of leading scholars, which will then make recommendations to the Executive Director. The award decisions will then be approved by the Transatlantic Academy governing board.

* Compatibility of proposed research with current theme
* Quality of proposal
* Confidence in candidate's ability to be a successful member of the Transatlantic Academy, as demonstrated by their ability to work in collaborative environment and previous scholastic achievements
*Facilities and Services:*
Fellows will be housed at the offices of the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington DC, located near Dupont Circle. Each fellow will be assigned an office, and will have access to conference rooms, kitchen facilities, and electronic resources. Windows-based personal computers are provided for each fellow, and part-time research assistants will be available based on need. Fellows will also be given the designation of Visiting Scholar at Georgetown University, and will be granted full access to university libraries. Fellows are responsible for finding their own housing in Washington, but some assistance may be provided by Transatlantic Academy staff, in addition to written resources.
*Length and Conditions of Fellowship:*
Fellows are expected to be full-time in residence for an entire academic year. Preference will be given to those applicants able to be in residence for the entire proposed ten month period. Fellows may not accept teaching assignments, other residential fellowships, or any other assignment that would cause prolonged absences from the academy. Fellows will be expected to attend bimonthly luncheons to discuss their progress and that of their colleagues and to contribute to the collaborative scholastic environment of the academy.
