The Second International Conference of Syria 2011: (Re) Building Institutions for Development
The Syria Trust for Development is pleased to announce and invite you to participate in the Second International Development Conference of Syria, to be held from 21-23 May 2011 in Aleppo, Syria.
Building on the success of the First International Development Conference of Syria (January 2010) in highlighting new approaches to development challenges by solidifying the partnership among the public, private and civil society sectors, the Second International Development Conference of Syria will provide a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences about institutional development and reform. The conference will benef from substantial experience accumulated in countries in which social and economic transitions have required re-thinking and re-building of formal and informal institutions.
Researchers, practitioners, analysts, and interested parties are invited to submit papers or case studies on best practices / lessons learned in human and economic development that are supported by evidence-based research. The organizers especially welcome papers that contribute to the theme of the conference: the role of institutions in development, innovations in institutional development, and applied / policy-oriented research on development and institutions. Topics might include:
- Frameworks for cross-sectoral partnership.
- Public perspectives on “good” institutions.
- Institutional governance.
- Evaluation of institutional performance in the development sector.
- Civil society perspectives on public institutional reform.
- Institutions and social / economic development.
- Formal vs. informal institutions and development.
- Needs and challenges of civil society institutions, building institutional bridges across sectors.
- Private sector institutional development and the evolution of corporate citizenship.
Papers and case studies should be between 15 and 40 double-spaced pages; they should be written in either English or Arabic and must be submitted in electronic format (Word or PDF). Submissions should be sent to: developmentconference@syriatrust.org no later than 1 March 2011.
Submitted case studies / papers will be reviewed by the conference’s technical committee and the authors informed about decisions and comments on the accepted papers by 15 March 2011. Final drafts, taking the technical committee’s comments into consideration, should be submitted no later than 1 May 2011. A final PowerPoint presentation should be submitted before 18 May 2011.
Those who wish to submit an extended abstract for preliminary review and comment may do so before 21 January 2011. They will receive feedback from the technical committee within ten days of their submission. They must still submit their papers by 1 March and final versions by 1 May 2011.
The organizers will cover three nights accommodation and meals for presenters of selected papers. Conference fees will also be waived. Presenters must arrange and fund their trip to Aleppo.
